Oxnard, California is known for boxing and has earned its nickname “Boxnard” because it has produced many professional boxers and multiple world champions. Despite its success in boxing, Boxnard has a negative reputation and is often referred to as a “bad” city. Boxing can change this. Boxing teaches us lessons that go beyond the ring. Boxing teaches us that we can fight negative stories with positive ones. We can tell counterstories as counterpunches to “knock out” false, negative portrayals about us. These counterstories as counterpunches can empower us and our communities.
