Las Promotoras
Alan Dominguez, Raul Paz Pastrana
Colorado, US, 2023, 25 Min
Filmmaker Alan Dominguez in Person
Cultivando, a small nonprofit in Adams County led by a handful of Indigenous, Latina women, is relentlessly fighting to end the environmental genocide that has led to decades of contamination of air, water and soil, in a predominantly Latino community and the subsequent impacts to health due to toxic exposure in the country’s most polluted zip code: 80216. The documentary tells the story of the Promotoras, fierce advocates from the community who work with neighbors to bring about social change. The environmental justice work of these warrior advocates shows us what is possible when the sheer power of community challenges the resident Goliath – the Suncor Oil Refinery.
The film will be followed by a community conversation facilitated by Jennifer Macias as part of the National Endowment for Humanities' United We Stand initiative.
